COURSE DESCRIPTION:
Drawing on long-established theories of traditional arts, this course introduces students to concepts that will enable us to envisage contemporary design practice through the lens of the traditional and Islamic worldview. Thus, we will not simply be looking back at the way design was practiced in the past, but how these ideas might continue to influence the way design is practiced today. Although the course is geared towards designers, all those interested in the ways our material worlds influence us on a spiritual and psychological level will benefit from the topics covered.
COURSE SCHEDULE:
Session 1: Reconceptualizing Design through a Traditional Framework
In this session, we will cover traditional definitions of art and beauty, define ontological design, and examine the implications of these concepts on design practice and our world.
Session 2: Spiritual Implications of Design
This session builds on the concept of ontological design and highlights the ways that design affects us on a spiritual level. Taking into consideration the far-reaching implications of design, we will also cover the moral responsibility and training of the artist/designer.
Session 3: Khayaal and Principles of Islamic Art and Design
In session 3, we will delve deeper into the interplay between the physical and spiritual worlds by exploring the concept of khayaal or imagination. In addition, we will discuss what it means for art to be “Islamic,” and the relationship between Islamic and other traditional civilizations around the world.
Session 4: From Theory to Practice: Book Design as a Model for UX Design
In this final session, we will synthesize concepts covered in prior sessions and translate theory to practice. As a case study, we will analyze traditional manuscript design and consider its potential implications on contemporary UX and web design. This session will be structured as a workshop and discussion to draw from the collective knowledge, insights, and experience of attendees.
