Bursa and Iznik, two extraordinary locations in the history of architecture, are the pioneers of the Ottoman classical period. Their architecture, which exhibits the earliest examples of central domes, has paved the way for Sinan’s works; Ulu Mosque, a peak example of a multi-dome mosque, Yeşil Mosque and Yıldırım Mosque, which are examples of T plan imaret mosques with a central social function, and Yeşil mosque in İznik are a few of the places where we can trace the roots of Sinan’s architectural genius.

On the other hand, buildings such as madrasas, tombs, hammams, and imaret mosques, all parts of a külliye complex, tell us about the social life of the time.

The ceramic tiles (çini) of Yeşil mosque and its tomb testify to the reception of Timurid techniques, which points to a collective cultural exchange from Central Asia to İran to Anatolia.

Bursa and Iznik whisper this exchange from many different aspects, one of them being the decorative elements such as geometric patterns. With its natural beauty, cuisine, and historical architecture, Bursa is an ancient Ottoman city that has been the center for sericulture, çini ceramic making, and many other crafts.
